The SSI Freediving Program


The SSI Freediving program provides students with all required knowledge, techniques, and safety considerations to be able to freedive safely with their buddies and progressively improve their personal bests in confidence. 

 
 SSI Level 1: Dive to 20m

 SSI Level 2: Dive to 30m

 SSI Level 3: Dive to 40m and more 

The SSI Freediving certifications are recognized in all SSI facilities so certify students can join trainings, boat dives and dive trips all over the world!

SSI Freediving Level 1

The level 1 certification provides divers with all knowledge and skills to be able to freedive safely with their buddies up to 20m depth. The course runs over a week end, with class presentations, pool sessions and open water dives. 

The class presentations cover:
  • The physiological aspects of Freediving
  • Breathing, relaxation techniques borrowed from Yoga (Pranayama)
  • Safety considerations to freedive safely: the buddy system, shallow water blackout, etc.
  • Training basics: CO2 and O2 tables, aerobic and anaerobic training, preparing for a performance
  • Depth and pressure, equalisation techniques
  • Equipment for Freediving
  • Dive planning and environment factors
The pool and open water sessions cover:
  • Finning techniques and streamlining: flutter kick, dolphin kick, proper weighting
  • Dynamic apnea swimming, with and without fins
  • Efficient duck diving: an efficient duck dive should take you to 5m depth with minimum effort
  • The structure of a dive and how to minimize effort 
  • Relaxation techniques to increase bottom time
  • Buddy procedures and how to handle situations where the diver lacks oxygen
  • Efficient equalisation
  • Methods to progressively increase performance safely

SSI Freediving Level 2

The level 2 certification is open to all students with a level 1 certification and a minimum of 20 logged dives. This certification provides students with all knowledge and skills necessary to Freedive to up to 30m depth, which is the maximum depth you will find for shore dives around Sydney. The course runs over 2 week ends, with flexible arrangements for students to get the mentoring they need to dive deeper and increase their performance.

The class presentations cover: 
  • Advanced breathing techniques 
  • Advanced relaxation with visualisation techniques
  • Advanced body, lungs, thoracic and diaphragm stretching techniques to reduce the lungs residual volume
  • Physiological aspects of deeper diving: Dolton's law of partial pressure, introduction to the effects of nitrogen in deep dives
  • Equipment and rigging basics for deeper dives
The pool and open water sessions cover:
  • Doing and providing safety for a maximum static breath-hold
  • Training, preparing, warming up and swimming a maximum Dynamic apnea, with and without fins
  • Advanced equalization techniques (Frenzal)
  • Managing and controlling a freefall (glide phase)
  • Deep safety and rescue
  • Introduction to Freediving competition disciplines: Free Immersion (FIM), Constant Weight (CWT), Constant Weight No Fins (CNF)
